Fun: 7.5

I really enjoy the golf course itself. It offers so many quality holes and a nice setup. What my group left talking about, though, was the amount of time we had to wait and the overall slow pace. It’s tough to have fun and get into any rhythm when there are four groups on one hole, and that happened on a couple of occasions. I have read others’ comments about this being a regular issue, so it would be great if the course could address it.

Favorite Hole

The par-4 3rd hole is a fun risk-reward hole of the tee that gives beautiful views from an elevated tee box. It’s not an especially long hole, measuring around 360 yards from the white tees, and it plays less due to the downhill tee shot. There are two large bunkers that dare you to try and cut off more with the tee shot, knowing that you can run out of room if you take too much club and miss your line. The second shot has some risk, too, as there’s water to the right of the green, so you might not want to go at the pin when it’s over there. None of the shots are too demanding, it’s just a matter of the strategy you choose.

Toughest Hole

Based on the way I have played it, the par-5 13th is the most difficult hole in, well, possibly anywhere, but I am going to leave the inexplicable lack of ability to hit a quality shot on that hole out of it. I think the next hole – the par-4 14th is actually the toughest hole on the course. First off, it’s long. It measures well over 400 yards from the back two tees with trouble on both sides. From there, large trees frame the air space in front of the green, waiting to grab any wayward shots or ones that don’t come in with the correct trajectory. Shots around the green are tough due to the unique terrain, so getting up and down on such a long hole isn’t the easiest task. This is one that feels like a bogey isn’t a bad score and you should take it and move along.

Worst Hole

Broadlands is a course that I really struggle to find a bad hole on. Because of that, I’m going to nit-pick a little. I am not a fan of a par-3 to finish the round. The par-3 18th is not a bad hole at all. I actually like the set up and the little collection area right of the green. It just feels awkward to finish on a par-3. Others might feel totally different. This is just one of my quirky opinions.

Got out before a large wave of forecasted rain and managed to avoid it all. A few things I will take from my round: First, the rough is thick and something you want to avoid. The odds of you getting a below-average lie in that stuff was really good, making it tough to even think about getting on the green. Second, and maybe this is because of the rough and overall wetness of the day, but Broadlands plays long. The White tees are just under 6,300 yards, but it felt like it played closer to 6,600 or 6,700 yards. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it just added to the challenge of the day. Pace of play was quite a bit better for this round, but it was a weekday and there was rain coming. Either way, I really enjoyed the course and had a great time with the three players I was paired with.

Previous Visits

September 2024: A beautiful day with a couple of my regular golf buddies. I have seen it before, and really heard that it was an issue, but pace of play was a big problem on this day. Not sure what can be done, exactly, but at one point, there were six groups on a two-hole stretch. On top of that, I managed to three-putt the 11th hole after driving the green.

July 2023: Got out on the Fourth of July.
