Course Design/Layout: 8
The look of Six Mile Creek gives off a wide-open feel. There aren’t a lot of trees, and the course is very exposed to the wind. However, there are many tee shots that are more demanding of accuracy than you might first think, as you can quickly leave yourself in a bad situation if you’re offline. In all, there are 12 tee shots where you’ll contend with water or swamp area. These are some of my favorite greens in the area, as I see the lines well on the large, undulated surfaces. They roll consistently well, straddling the line between fast and slow quite nicely. The course allows for multiple strategies to attack, depending on your confidence in driver. This one will help you get your steps in, as it’s a good jaunt from the first hole of each side to the other side of some railroad tracks where the bulk of the course is found. There are quite a few instances where holes are too close together, causing shots that are just a little offline to be entangled with other players. I’ve seen a few occasions where two people claim the same ball.
Course Condition: 8.5
Course condition at Six Mile Creek is always solid. I find I never leave with any real complaints. The turf is good, and the greens are nice. The rough isn’t especially long, but is challenging to hit out of or even find your ball. The bunkers tend to be on the packed, dense side, which I prefer. A well-conditioned course is something you might not even notice until after you’re done, and you realize everything was in good shape.
Practice Area: 6
The practice green near the clubhouse and first tee is large with plateaus and ridges to mimic what you’ll see on the course. There’s plenty of room to hit some pitches in the rough, which you might need to do to loosen up, since there is no driving range. I don’t always hit balls to loosen up before a round, but it’s nice to have the option if I want, so not having a range is a downer. If you’re someone that absolutely wants a range to use before you play, this rating is probably too high.
Clubhouse: 7.5
The pro shop is quite small, but it’s attached to a nice bar with a good amount of seating for relaxing after your round. They offer quality food options, and, to my understanding, they have the best Bloody Mary mix of any course around.
Carts: 7.5 (updated April 2026)
Six Mile Creek appears to have replaced their entire fleet of golf carts in 2026. They’re still basic models with no real frills, but they run better than the old ones and have the nice big console to put all your stuff while you play. You’re still definitely going to be thankful for when you realize how far the second tee is from the first green.
Staff: 8
The staff in the pro shop is friendly, and have been responsive when I have reached out via email or phone. The beverage carts are pretty well stocked and do a nice job of covering the course.
Value: 8
For a while, Six Mile Creek was overcharging, in my opinion. Now that greens fees in Dane County have exploded after COVID, they’ve normalized and are much more reasonable. The best deal you’ll find is a Bucky Book coupon good for two rounds of 18 with a cart for $80 – that’s $40 a person! And it’s valid ANYTIME. That’s a value rating of 11 in my book.
Challenge: 8.5
Six Mile Creek can be a sneaky challenging course. At first glance, it seems pretty wide open, which it pretty much is, though there is a good amount of water and swamp to maneuver around. You just have to know where you cannot miss. There are some longer par-4s, as well as some shorter ones, but they’re no cake walk. If you can get off the tee well on this course, you’ll really have a chance to do well. All that can go out the window if the wind is blowing, though. The course is basically unprotected, so when it blows, it really blows. Heavy wind and a lot of holes with water can be a bad combination.
Fun: 9
I went several years without playing this course, but now that I have come back, it’s one of my favorites. Something about it suits my eye, and I have had some of my very best rounds there. It’s challenging without being unfair, and I enjoy putting the greens. There are several risk/reward holes, and if you play it a few times, you’ll learn where to push your luck and where to stay conservative.
Favorite Hole
Hole #9 is a medium-length par-3 with the right mixture of challenge and welcoming when you see it. There’s water short and trees long of the large, tiered green, but it is framed in a way that makes it feel very accessible. The course can get creative with pin placements on this green, too, making shot placement a priority on certain locations. A pin in the back right is likely going to be on a little shelf that is very challenging to get to, making a two-putt even more difficult.
Toughest Hole
Hole #5 is a par-5 that snakes back and forth between two large ponds, requiring either a bold line off the tee or precision in your approach. If you have length off the tee, you can cut the hole down to size rather easily, but if you fail to pull it off, you’re going to be dropping and still a long ways back. Playing it safe can result in leaving yourself a shot between two ponds, with a penalty area on the left. You want to be aggressive enough to have a short shot in for your third, but the landing area gets narrower the more aggressive you are, not to mention everything kicks towards the water on the right. It’s a good hole that greatly rewards bold shots and punishes poor ones.
Worst Hole
I don’t really think hole #13 is a bad hole, but the tee shot is one I always struggle with. I have played Six Mile Creek many times through the years, but I still struggle with the best line to play off the tee. With marsh all down the right side of the dogleg right par-4, you can’t be too bold in your attempt to cut off yardage. Playing safe to the left can lead to you running out of fairway, or even dry land if you’re a longer hitter. I have found a long iron of this tee to the fat part of the fairway is the best way to attack, but I am not sure I will remember that the next time I pull up to the tee.
Last Visit: August 2026
As I was driving to Waunakee, it seemed like all the flags I saw were barely move, signifying a pretty calm day. Once I got to the course, the wind steadily increased. Anybody that has played at Six Mile Creek knows that the wind is usually worse there, and it can cause some major challenges to controlling your golf ball. While it wasn’t anywhere near the windiest day I’ve seen there, the 20-25 mph wind was definitely something to take note of. The highlight of my day was a birdie on a nemesis hole for me, the par-3 14th – my third birdie of the day. After struggling mightily on that hole for years, I have now parred it and birdied it in my last two attempts.
Previous Visits
June 2026: I love to take advantage of the Bucky Book coupon for Six Mile Creek. In the Madison area, there’s just not a better deal. I joined my regular group of buddies, and it was a beautiful day. The wind picked up after we started, and that can cause some problems on this course, but it wasn’t too bad. For whatever reason, the Meadows just suits my eye and I feel good when I tee it up there. I had one of my best rounds of the year, and I even managed to two-putt par the 14th hole. The short little par-3 had wrecked my world so often. I think I’ve made bogey or worse on at least the last 10 times I’ve played it. So I am pretty sure the group behind me found it odd that I audibly celebrated my tee shot that about 20 feet from the hole. It was a big deal to me.
April 2026: Already my second visit to Six Mile Creek this year, and I have to say there’s no better value in my area than the Bucky Book coupon there. If you plan on playing even once on a weekend in Waunakee in 2026, it makes sense to buy one. The weather was wonderful, so the course was pretty packed. The greens were on the slow side, but we’ve had a lot of rain, and you could feel the moisture. With a new driver in the bag, I hit some of the best drives I can remember on certain holes. Once again, the short par-3 14th hole has an absolute hold on me. No matter what I am doing or how I am playing, I simply butcher this hole. One of these days, I’ll hit a good shot there and will shake whatever is going on there.
March 2026: An early-spring visit to Six Mile Creek is becoming a tradition for me, as another unseasonable warm start to the season produced a perfect day for golf. The course was in pretty darn good shape, all things considered. The biggest surprise was seeing the new golf carts being delivered as we pulled into the parking lot. The course was definitely in need of an upgrade, and while they’re not fancy, these definitely ran better than what I’ve had in the past.
June 2025: The Meadows had finally dried out on my last visit, and the course was in really nice shape. The greens were back to rolling well, and the fairways were very solid. There are still issues with a lot of the rough, but overall, the condition was back to what I expect after some previous visits with a lot of water. I played with two younger guys, one from Waunakee, that seemed to bring the best out of me. I played some of the best golf of my life after a slow start. i birdied four holes in a six-hole stretch, and on the day, I had six more really good birdie opportunities that turned into pars. Something about Sixmile Creek that suits my eye, because I typically play very well here.
April 2025: This was actually my second time playing at Six Mile Creek in 2025, playing about six weeks earlier during a burst of warm weather we had. The course was beyond saturated that day, and my game was worse. So I returned to the scene of the crime, hoping to see some improvement. My swing was much better, but we had gotten a lot of rain in the area that morning, so the course was still pretty wet. The greens weren’t soggy like the last time, but they were pretty slow due to the moisture. All in all, my group missed the second batch of rainstorms by about 30 seconds – it started to pour after my approach shot on 18. It looks like they are doing to work to repair some of the cart paths, which is much needed. Hopefully it isn’t a project that takes too long.
October 2024: Had to get out on a truly magnificent fall day in southern Wisconsin. The colors were really popping – the bright reads, oranges and yellows, including those trees that look like they are on fire. Everything was beautiful. I thought the course was in better shape than when I played it a month earlier, though you could still tell it was pretty firm based on some of the huge bounces I saw. I got paired up with a threesome from Iowa, and I had such a great time with them. Didn’t hurt that I played one of my best rounds of the year, making a couple birdies, including a chip in on #4. It was one of those days that I had to remind myself to be thankful for after it was over, because it was a great one.
September 2024: Hadn’t played at one of my favorite spots (and favorite deals with the Bucky Book) in awhile this summer, so I was happy to get back. It was a beautiful day, though a little on the breezy side, which makes this wide-open course really play tougher. The fairways and greens were really in great shape, but the rough was, well, rough. Crabgrass was everywhere, leaving some interesting lies. Not sure went on, but I hope they can improve that.
May 2024: My first trip to one of my regulars this season. It was a beautiful day, but the wind was blowing pretty well, which you will definitely feel at Six Mile. They must have gotten a ton of rain, too, because the course was really wet in areas. I commented that the 10th green – it was about noon when we were on it – was still so wet that you could see our footprints. The rough around the greens was pretty inconsistent and led to a handful of pretty poor lies. Doubled the first hole, which is really demoralizing, because it’s one of the easier holes on the course. Overall, was a decent day of play, highlighted by parring the last three holes.
